Zagora
The town has become famous for a signpost that reads Timbuktou 52 days by Camel!! It was from here that the Saadians from Arabia began their conquest of Morocco in the 16th century. Later they conquered Timbuktou from there and controlled the Sahara Gold trade. There is a good souk on Wednesday and Sunday and it is an excellent base fr exploring the dunes of M’hamid about 30 kms south. Also a great place for astronomy lovers to explore the sky over the desert at night or geographers to witness dunes stabilisation. The Jews of Morocco were settled in nearby Amazrou.
